What is copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection provided to the authors of “original works” and includes such things as literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual creations, both published and unpublished. Copyright does not protect ideas. It only protects the specific and original expression of the idea. A good example of this is that there are many films and books based on the classic boy meets girl theme in which the girl’s parents disapprove of boy and after many tears, true love finally triumphs. This theme cannot be monopolised, but original works to it can be. The same can be said of all other works.
( this above information was found at http://www.piperpat.com/IPInformation/Introduction/WhatisCopyright/tabid/92/Default.aspx)
Why is it important?
It is important as it protects authors rights in order to keep their own work private, and to provide them with all the benefits which they should get with their piece of work.
Due to getting an agreement with the artist of the track for my music video, there is no copyright struggle caused for me and my group.

Jamie Thraves Case Study
Case study 1
- Director - Jamie Thraves
- Made short films at university
- Used award winning short film as a "calling card" to get a "foot in the door" with the video production company factory films. Began by shooting three low budget music videos - cost about £5000 each.
This is how the process works
- A commissioner from a record label sends a track to 5-10 directors
- The directors then each submit a treatment
- This stage is unpaid
- The director who had submitted the 'best' treatment is then commissioned to make the video
- Only then is the director paid
- As can be seen for many directors in the business it is a precious existence where their livelihood is dependent on each commission.
- Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his two best known videos and each was accepted.
Case study 2
- Jamie Thraves most recent video - Japanese video; Popstars - Song for Lisa
- Currently videos cost about £20,000
- Shooting time - 2 days
- Jamie has used the music videos to get into the film business
- Has 50 far shot 3 features
- The low down
- The cry of the end
- Treade Jr
- Jamie's tips
- Use the lyrics but try not to be literal
- Most importantly - go with the emotion of the lyrics
Radiohead - Just
- £100,000 budget
- Shot in three days
Coldplay - The Scientist
- £200,000 budget
- Shot in three days

unsigned.com
unsigned.com is a website which has profiles of 1000's of artists who have yet not been signed, and in some cases not even found. On the website you will find profiles of artists from various music genre's. This website has allowed me to research into the type of music i would like to use. Although i did not choose an artist from the website, it was an open option. If however i did choose an artist from the website i would need to contact the artist through the contact details i have left. They would then hopefully contact me back, giving me the permission to use their tract. This results in me overcoming copyright laws, as permission is given.

Three of my favourite music videos
Here is one of my favourite videos, called Hush little baby by Wretch 32 and featuring Ed Sheeran. one reason why this is my favourite video is that it conveys how some men may feel when planning to start a family, and the way they may wish to not rush into things.
The music video is by Jermaine Scott better known as the English rapper Wretch 32, who is a well known popular UK artist. Wretch 32 is also known to be in 2 genres of music; Grime and British hip-hop. He is signed to the label 'ministry of sound'
The artist uses the key convention of lip synching very effectively, making the video look very realistic. The song also consists of a male UK singer known as Ed Sheeran, however the video does not contain him lip synching as most of the video is made up of clips from events in peoples lives.
In my opinion i believe that the video effectively conveys the mood of the song, as it shoes emotion by the actor towards the fact that he is soon to become a father.
the media institution

Music Video Success Criteria
- Word of mouth (ie, Gangnam Style)
- Number of hits on YouTube
- Newspaper articles/TV reports
- Number of times shown on television
- Amount of publicity
- Download (legal/illegal)
- Charts
- CD sales
- Last word
It is worth nothing how there has been a massive switch in the importance of YouTube from television channels such as MTV. Nowadays, most viewing of music videos now appear to be online.
Key conventions for a music video
Here are some of the key conventions i could think of, which i put down into a presentation and turned it into a slideshare.

Purpose of music promo video
The whole point of a music video is to raise profile of an artist(s). If a video is successful then it means an artist is too. Through music videos artists can also interact with their fans, and to people who they are trying to get through to.
The process of creating a music video
Throughout this term me and my group will work together to create an effective music video. The main aim will be to make the video connect with the choice of music. We will organize ourselves and set ourselves individual tasks to complete, in order to get it done on time.
we will start by making several story lines, which we can then choose from.
After choosing the best story line, we will create mood boards with ideas about what should feature in the video frames.
After effectively planning out the music video, we will plan out when and what to film. After filming a certain amount of footage, we can all come back and start to edit it and make it look realistic.
The whole piece should then come together, and our music video will be done.

The Brief
The task is for me to produce a music 'promo' video. It should be approximately 5 minutes long, and can be done individually or working amongst a group of up to four members.
A 'digipak' (cover only) for it's release on CD, and a magazine advertisement for the digipak should also be produced in order to complete the A2 coursework.
