Justification of ideas in relation to genre and artist

We have decided to base the story line of the music video on a couple, and the actor thinking about his relationship. This is because the genre of music, being RnB and pop, always looks for romantic story lines, as this is what the audience look for.  The artist has also used similar ideas when he produced a music video for this track. He also uses similar story lines in most of his other videos, which we then tried to relate to in our music video. Additionally the song has a meaning, which is basically a man cheating time after time, reflecting his thoughts on his girl friend, who he may still have feeling for. knowing this we have produced ideas which relate to the song and basically puts the words of the song into pictures.

Detailed outline of ideas

After considering all our possible ideas, we have took the best ones and decided to use them for our project. The music video should now consist of shots of:
- an actor and actress out in the park, they may possibly sitting on a bench, or running around playing and joking.
- The actor lip syncing whilst walking down River Themes
- actor lip syncing from different angles
- location e.g london eye, big ben etc
- actor lip syncing in slow motion with cars going by fast behind him.

Analysis of student digipak

Above is a picture of a past students digipak. As you can see it consists of near enough all the conventions of a good dikipak. It sends out a good image of the artists, and gives the audience a basic understanding of what type of music lies within the album.

Digipak analysis

here is an example of a Digipak, It is an album by a pop artist known as Katy Perry, below i have analyzed  the digipak.

The list of songs have been made to stand out with the use of the colour red, as it contrasts highly with the pink clouds. also the names of writers have been put in blue which also stands out from the image of cloud.
The colour of katy perry's hair also stands out from the pink background which therefore catches peoples eyes.
The cd's have also been personalised for katy perry making it unique and bubbly suiting all pop fans.

Jessie J Magazine analysis

There are many advantages to this magazine cover, as it has most of the conventions needed to make an efficient magazine cover. Above is the image of the magazine cover, the conventions attached to it is the image of the artist, the company logo's, links such as the artists website, album title, and finally who features in the album.

As the majority of the advert is a picture of the artist herself it shows how independent she is, and how she is a solo artist etc.
Also the album title is repeated twice, to make sure that the audience are aware of what it is called. The language used in the magazine such as 'smash' may have been used to relate to teenagers to catch their attentions.

Magazine Music Advert Conventions

In a magazine you are likely to find certain things on it, these are known as conventions, and here is a list of these conventions:

-Release Date
-Album Name
-the Artist Name
-Reviews
-Websites
- Scanning items for more info about the magazine
-Images
-Where certain songs may be available, e.g itunes, HMV etc.
The image above is a perfect example of a magazine advert for an Artist. On the image it tells the audience where the song or album is available to be downloaded from, also the release date, and most of the key conventions to make up the magazine advert.

Famous art analysis

The biggest band in history, rightfully had one of the most recognizable (and grammy-winning) album covers ever. The image includes over 70 cardboard cut outs of important personalities, friends and influences. For instance Marilyn Monroe, Frues, Marlon Brando and even Karl Marx. All the figures are representative for that era and are a witness to the bands creativity.

Editing to the beat

Here i have done an exercise where i have edited to the beat of a track. from this i have learnt that in order to make an efficient music video, i must make sure the images match with the track we are editing to. This task will help me when editing the music video as i will make sure the video is edited to the beat.

storyboard

Here is our storyboard outlining the shoots we will try and take for our music video. it is a basic outline and will guide us when we decide to film for the video.

Animatic

Here is the animatic created through Final cut express. It is the basic outline of our story line, or the story line we intend to use.

Survey monkey

A member of my group had created a survey on survey monkey in order to get opinions from the audience on the type of work we should put into creating our music video. The results gained from this survey will be put up on a further date.

To take the survey click onto the link provided below
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DLZXX2V

here is a screen grab of a member of my group, promoting the survey monkey in order to get responses in order to help us with the production of our music video.

Vox Pops

Vox pops are used to get the voice of people across. it is usually shot in public, where the audience are then asked to give spontaneous responses to a certain topic. in this case we asked several student on their opinions about what they look for in a music video, in order to get an idea of how we set ours out.
The vox pop for our music video is shown above.

album cover

This is Tinie Tempah's album cover, as you can see it is very simple, with sharp and eye catching fonts and editing. For instance we see Tinie with his arms around a city, this shows his power, which reflects the power of the songs which may be in the album itself. the colours are also very eye catching, as there is a contrast of pink and blue, as well as silvery stars.

Ideas of how to broaden audience for music video

In order to make the music video reach its maximum potential, it is essential that it reaches a wider audience. In order to do this we have chosen a song which appeals to a wide category of people. It is a song thats likely to be charted and so appeals to whoever may listen to the radio regularly.

Also to appeal to pop fans, we will try and make the music video seem happy. Additionally to make it appeal to other genre fans we will try and add aspects of techniques that certain types of artists may use to appeal to their fans.

detailed research into chosen artist

Here is the artist profile from angel's recording labels website, known as Island Records.

Angel also has his own website, for fans to regularly visit, to ensure that they are up to date with what Angel is up to. - http://thisisangel.com/

Target audience

For my music video i would say my target audience are teenagers, however to get the music to a wider range of people, i will try make it suitable for all ages.
It will be mostly suitable for teenagers however as Angel himself makes music suited for them. Also his music is charted so is suitable to whoever may listen to the radio stations regularly.

100 Top music videos - #1 - Michael Jackson / Thriller

This is the number one music video of all times for many reasons. Firstly due to being a short movie type music video, which is known to cost the greatest amount to make compared to any other music video. Also this video brought about a cultural impact as the video was sensational. The video at the time was only played on a certain day at a certain time, as at that time internet was not available for everyone and video 's were only being seen on televisions. The video itself was so fascinating that everyone would agree Michael Jackson with his Thriller has to be the greatest music video ever.

100 Top music videos - #9 - Madonna / Vogue

Not only did this music bring about a controversy in religion, but it also created such an impact on future music video's. Madonna is known for her randomness, however this video was where it all began and was the video which drew the attention of the public in.

100 Top music videos - #41 - The spice girls / wannabe

This music video was loved by the nation as it was the release of a new girl band, it had 4 unique characters which were all portrayed in the video, and allowed the audience to interact with them through that.

100 Top music videos - #55 - Fatboy Slim / Praise you

This video was special because it was cheap and simple. It was not even planned to be used for the actual music video, however the dance was so querky and relevant that it was used, and fortunately was enjoyed by the nation.

Tells a great historic story, and so catches the audiences eyes, which has made it to be a music video never to forget.

100 Top music videos - #78 - Godley and Creme / Cry

The lady crying brought great emotion to the viewers and so is known to be one of the greatest music video's of all time. Although there isn't much going on, the emotions read the story behind the song to the viewers.

100 Top music videos - #87 - Talking heads / One in a lifetime

This is known to be one of the greatest music videos of all time, as it was a quirky video which had a great dance to it. Also the editing and. Techniques used in it, was for the first time and so from then on other artists have took and used this idea.

This song was a song was one of elton johns top music videos as it had such a big meaning behind it, and the actor who was in it was known to be in the same situation as the lyrics in the actual song.

100 Top music videos - #95 - The cardigans / My favourite game

During the video we see the journey the singer makes, moving side to side on a road. The ending is what makes this music video one of the greatest, as she crashes and flies out onto the ground. However there are five different endings, one being that she does not die and gets up after the dramatic car crash.

100 Top music videos - #96 - So Solid Crew / 21 seconds

This was the starting point for the well known urban band So Solid Crew. The name of the song being 21 seconds basically meant that each band member had 21 seconds to introduce themselves. The video was a massive hit as every member had there own characters and at that time this was something different and unique, so most people enjoyed watching it.

100 Top music videos - #98 - Bronski Beat / Smalltown Boy

The great thing about this music video is that it tells a story about a young lad who  was cast away by his family for being homosexual. We see that the band members were all homosexual, and this video helped to show how homosexuals were treated differently by society, as we view the scenes at the swimming pool.

Things learned from preliminary task

The main things i learnt from the preliminary task was that for an efficient music video, you will need:
- good lip syncing, as it makes the music video look more realistic
- editing to beats, as the shots will look on point if the shots match with the beats
- matching setting, the settings of the scene should try and match the song choice as it will make the music video look more realistic.
All these are needed in our main music video, to make it look more realistic.

preliminary video

he is the finished video of me and my team mate, Perry, lip synching to the track 'don't go breaking my heart'. Although the lip synching was not perfect, its made us realise that when it comes to the actual music video, we will need to make sure the lip sync is perfect. This may have to be done by finding a person who is good at drama to come and act for us. Also it was hard editing the video as the at some points the images didn't match with the video, and so when it comes to the music video we have to make sure that the video blends in with the music.

Preliminary Task

To see if we are capable of editing a music video, we were set a preliminary task as a group, where we had to film a short clip of two people singing to the song 'don't go breaking my heart'. It was essential that it was edited according to the beats, and that the lip synching looked acceptable.

Lyrics to chosen song

Angel - time after time
Well I know
Love struck
Bb can't watch
If you know what I mean.
I don't mean to be doing what I'm doing...
When I'm doing what I'm doing.
(Does that make sense)
Damn I don't mean to make her cry that's wack
Can't believe I went and broke her heart like that
NO.
She don't wanna take me back
S**t if I was her I wouldn't take me back
NO
The parties and the women
She's sleeping by herself while I'm out here slipping
 Thinking to myself
What the flip was I thinking
 She always held me down
She was there from the beginning
If only I could take it back,
every bad deed I would ere-e-e-e-ase.
I must admit that I got out of hand
A different girl each and every da-a-a-ay.
 Tiffany, Stacey, Tracey UM (damn)
 I stop remembering na-a-a-ames.
 You can blame me
This is my fault
I'm really only sad I got caught.
No I don't wanna leave
But I can't stand to spend another day by your side
And I wish you could believe
But I did it time after time
I did it time after time
Time after time
NEXT, TIME, IT'LL, BE, DIFFERENT, UM
Time after time
NEXT, TIME, IT'LL, BE, DIFFERENT, UM
Time after time.
Eh, if you're able and your willing
I did a lot of dirt so I need forgiving
WAIT, I know you're packing and your leaving
 You're cussing and your fussing,
then we fight and then you're screaming.
Eh, you're tired of the lies,
I wanna work it out
You wanna say goodbye
Yeah,
I made my bed so I know I gotta lay in it
I just wish that you would stay in it
If only I could take it back,
every bad deed I would ere-e-e-e-ase.
I must admit that I got out of hand
A different girl each and every da-a-a-ay.
Tiffany, Stacey, Tracey UM (damn)
I stop remembering na-a-a-ames.
You can blame me
 This is my fault
I'm really only sad I got caught.
No I don't wanna leave
But I can't stand to spend another day by your side.
And I wish you could believe
But I did it time after time
I did it time after time
Time after time.
 You know the last time,
its the same thing that you said (eh).
And now I'm laying here,
just crying by the bed.
I wish that you'd believe me,
 but I know you can't.
Cause I hurt you time and time again.
Oh baby, No I don't wanna leave
But I can't stand to spend another day by your side.
And I wish you could believe
But I did it time after time
I did it time after time Time after time.
NEXT, TIME, IT'LL, BE, DIFFERENT, BE, DIFFERENT
NEXT, TIME, IT'LL, BE, DIFFERENT, UM, DIFFERENT UM
NEXT, TIME, IT'LL, BE, DIFFERENT, UM,
NEXT, TIME, IT'LL, BE, DIFFERENT, UM
Ohhh time after time.

Choice of song for my music video

Here is the track we have chosen to make a music video to.

Song change

Due to the song 'fire' being taken down from youtube, we have resulted in a song change. We will hopefully stick to the same artist, however are still deciding what song is best for what we aim to achieve.
After the song is chosen, i will put up the lyrics and ideas of the new song.

Practise editing

last lesson i edited unknown shots with unknown music. I made sure that the clips matched with the beat on the music, it was difficult to be precise however it was eventually done. Some of the beats did match at the start however as the song went on the clips looked unorganised, and so to make my music video perfect i will have to get good shots, making sure i get several. Also I have chosen a song that does not contain too many beats which will therefore allow me to be versatile with the way i edit.
The video of the practise editing will be put up on a sooner date.

rough outline of initial ideas

The outline of or music video has been decided, and we also have several ideas which we may result in using if our main one does not work out. Below i will write the story lines in order, with the first being the one we wish to achieve the most:

1. A boy leaves his house listening to a voice note from a girl, there is then a flashback of them two enjoy themselves in the past. After the flashback the boy starts running and comes across a little kids bike, and decides to take it to go find her. However the kid starts running for his bike back which leads to the boy having to get off (he also crashes into an object which leads him to fall to the floor. A car then stops as he sees the boy on the floor, offering a lift. The car then takes the boy to the destination where the girl is.

2.We have a boy in the park taking a morning jog. He then receives a voice note from an old friend. He realises that the girl who is speaking is someone he misses and wishes to find. He then takes several transports in london to get to her house, passing several landmarks on his way there.

3. The boy sings the song in several locations, keeping it simple by just lip syncing it the whole way through.

Lyrics to my chosen music

Angel - Fire

Baby I was born to ride
You say you like them certified
Well baby I'm the rough type
Kiss you in the coot with my nine and blow your mind
Take you on a holiday
And I aint talking no central plane
Come we roll up in the slum
Where your hair boom bum drink shots and blow our minds

Cause baby I'm addicted
And I ain't gunna lie I'm tryna hit this
Baby you can witness
That I'm a rude boy are you twisted
Even though
I see
I'm rolling a fire
So violate me
Or my team
I'm rolling a fire

Baby I was born to ride
You say you like them versatile
Well baby I'm the nuts type
Listen to the feegees then put on some Giggs all night
Take you on a private date
And I ain't talking no private place
Come we roll up in my house
Where my mum cook fish rice and peas is that okay

Cause baby I'm addicted
And I ain't gunna lie I'm tryna hit this
Baby you can witness
That I'm a rude boy are you twisted
Even though
I see
I'm rolling a fire
So violate me
Or my team
I'm rolling a fire

Audio Clip

This is the music we are going to use to produce our music video.

Chosen Artist

Angel

Sirach Charles, better known as Angel, is what the music industry would indelibly mark as a triple threat. Singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer, 22 year old Angel is quite possibly the UK Pop and R & B industry’s best kept secret.

West London bred Angel began much like many do, as a gifted child, unquenchably enthusiastic and rather uniquely, as one fifth of a family singing group along with his siblings. Known as The Charles Family, the group consisted of Angel and his siblings Tahirah, Sariah, Akelle and Kassa. The group were testament to a strong genetic musical aptitude and a passionate fatherwho managed their early careers. The Charles Family came to prominence as a result of a BBC One documentary- One Life (2004), which followed the family’s musical journey. Initially signed to Warner Music, the dynamic family group soon parted ways with the label, though by that point it was apparent that Angel had developed a thirst for making music, coupled with an undeniable talent that propelled him to go solo.

Young Sirach went about experimenting with his sound, and was particularly compelled to take up producing the music, he would sing. Angel recalls, “I started producing from about 10 years old, I was fascinated with music and creating it from scratch so I’d use anythingavailable to me, Atari Video Music, Cubase, it was all a case of trial and error[…] it was important to me to be able to create what I was going to sing over, and laying it all down: kick, snare, strings, percussion all before I sing over it means there’s a lot of heart to my music”.

Taking it upon himself to study music in his own time, Angel took to listening to Donny Hathaway, from whose music he picked up lessons in song writing, R & B singer Brandy Norwood, whose vocal arrangements and delivery Angel would revel in, plus the record production expertise of maestros Quincey Jones and Rodney Jerkins.

The study, alongside his natural gifts paid off, as Angel at just 22 now boasts the ability to write, compose and produce his songs from scratch. A talent that was identified by Universal Music who in late 2009 signed Angel to Universal Publishing as a songwriter. Angels’ knack with words has seen him pen songs used by UK urban acts such as Roll Deep and Devlin, as well as him composing pop pieces for the likes of JLS and Cheryl Cole.

When conceptualising his own songs, Angel draws heavily from his own experiences. Not content with making fickle music, for a throwaway culture, Angel’s strength lies within his ability to make music that resonates with people’s lives. “I’m quite the story teller” he states, and nothing is more demonstrative of this perhaps than Angel’s lead single off his forthcoming debut mixtape ‘Patience Is A Virtue’. This aforementioned track is Julie, an infectious, electronic driven club track, which tells the story of a relationship gone sour. Having been penned and produced entirely by Angel, he feels it’s the perfect introduction to who he is as an artist. The ‘Patience Is A Virtue’ mixtape is an extended allegory of Angel’s musical journey so far, from being part of his family group, through to the BBC documentaries on their lives, the continual perfecting of his craft over the years, to this point as an accomplished songwriter and musician. The first mixtape is to be followed by a second, entitled ‘7 Minutes Before Time’ followed by Angel’s eagerly anticipated debut album ‘About Time’.

For Angel, his music is cathartic, and though he makes no claims to being a squeaky clean Pop Prince (which is underlined by the tinge of irony in his name, Angel) he aims to inspire, as Angel fondly recalls, “The nicest things anybody said about my music was that they put it on when they have a headache or feeling stressed and it always soothes the headache away, for me that’s a big deal the idea of music healing pain, it can’t get much better than that.”

Contacting Artist

So after considering copyright, the status of the artist and the type of music they perform; we have decided to go with UK Pop/RnB singer Angel. To contact him we have used twitter since it's the easiest way of contacting this up and coming artist. We sent him a message explaining who we are and why we wanted his permission; he said it was fine for us to use any of his songs in his mixtape so we browsed through it a few times and found the perfect song. So we then contacted him again to receive the lyrics.
